Dog Food Allergies
Dog food allergies are probably one of the most common forms of allergies in dogs, second only to flea bite allergies, and allergies to inhalants. They account for about ten percent of all canine allergies and can be very hard on the pet, as well as the owner.
We do not understand everything about food allergies, and how they occur. However, we are able to identify the symptoms and thus accurately diagnose whether an animal is suffering from a food allergy, as well as how to treat it.
Common Causes Of Allergies:
According to recent studies, certain foods are more likely to cause allergies than others are. Many of these foods are among the most common ingredients contained in dog food, which has led to speculation that the more an animal is exposed to an ingredient; the more likely it is that an allergy will develop. These common ingredients and allergens are:
1. Chicken
2. Lamb
3. Beef
4. Dairy Products
5. Fish
6. Eggs
7. Wheat
8. Soy
9. Corn
Symptoms Of Allergies Caused By Foods
The symptoms for food allergies in dogs are much the same as those caused by any other allergen. The principal symptom is itchy skin, particularly around the facial area, the ears, the feet and forelegs, armpits and the area surrounding the anus. There are also a host of other symptoms including:
1. Reoccurring skin infections
2. Reoccurring ear infections
3. Excessive scratching, particularly around the aforementioned areas
4. Hot spots
5. Hair loss
6. Excessive bowel movements
While it is difficult to distinguish a food related allergy from an allergy caused by some other factor, symptoms such as skin and ear infections that do not respond to the normal treatments can make the diagnosis easier.
Food Allergy Diagnosis
Diagnosing a food related allergy is made harder due to the fact that many other ailments can share the same symptoms. For example, yeast and bacterial infections, mange, and flea bite allergies all exhibit many of the same symptoms described above.
Therefore, the first step is for the veterinarian to rule out all other possible causes. Step two, is the food trial.
During a food trial, the animal is given a totally new food for about twelve weeks. It is important that this is a type of food that your pet has never had before in order for the results to be accurate. It is also very important that during this period your dog eats ONLY the recommended food. No treats or anything else that is not part of the diet.
An easy way to make sure that the food you're giving your dog contains only the ingredients allowed, is to make all the food yourself as you are then in control of what goes into the food.
Treatment:
The main treatment for a dog food related allergy is avoidance. Once you have discovered a type of food that your pet is not allergic to, do not change it. If you are creating homemade dog food for your pet, experiment with different ingredients until you find the allergen and then remove it from the diet permanently.
