Commonly Seen Dog Skin Problems

Dog skin problems are the number one reason for dogs to scratch more than often and can be caused from many different things like a condition, allergy, or parasite. The best way to get treatment is through a vet because this can be done in a quick way. When scratching is seen some additional things need to be looked at as well.

Rashes are typically allergies. The best way to aid in relief is through corticosteroids but this is not something that will solve the problem. The only way to really get rid of the problem is to figure out what the pet is allergic to and then to make sure that there is no exposure to the allergen.

There are many different things that can be considered allergens. The most common ones for dogs are pollen, insect bites, grooming products, and food. If the dog focuses the majority of his itching on his ears then a yeast infection is probably to blame.

Yeast infections will present with a variety of different symptoms as well. The main ones are itching, irritation, and discoloration. Topical creams are something that a vet can prescribe and will help heal the problem.

When a cream will not heal the pet then there are medicated bath options and oral medications to consider. One such condition is superficial bacterial folliculitus which will show on the skin as scabs, bumps, and sores. Of course if the pet has long hair then these will not be seen but instead he or she might appear scaly and be shedding.

This condition is most common when it occurs in conjunction with something else that is happening and not usually seen by itself. Puppies are commonly seen with many things and one of the most common is impetigo. With this condition the skin will have pus filled blisters.

Then the blisters will break and the blisters will scab over. The abdomen area is where these are seen as the puppy will not have hair there. Topical ointments are the common treatment option.

If a dog has scales and greasy skin then seborrhea is probably to blame. This can be genetic which means no cure or caused by another underlying issue. This issue would have to be found and treated before the condition would go away.

Hair loss and a thinning coat can be seen in dogs as alopecia. Where as mange will show up as sores, itching, redness, and hair loss. Finally some additional skin problems will show up when a dog is exposed to parasites like ticks and fleas.

Another common issue for dogs that shows up as lesions that are in a circular shape is ringworm and it is treated with an anti-fungal cream. There are far too many dog skin problems to be able to distinguish them all but these are the common ones that might be seen. Remembering if the dog has any of these that he or she should be kept clean and kept from licking the sores to avoid having to wear a cone collar because of acral lick granuloma.
