What To Do If Your Dog Has Fleas
Both the dog owner and the pet will be affected by flea infestation. A dog that is infested with fleas will be beleaguered by the severe itching that is caused by the flea bites and as a result, the excessive scratching can result to secondary skin infections. Measures necessary to eradicate a flea infestation have to be applied as apart from the discomfort the tiny parasites bring to dogs, fleas can also transmit a number of canine diseases to humans.
Incessant scratching that often result to raw skin and skin irritation as well as hair loss are some of the symptoms of flea infestation. A dog infested with fleas will have flea dirt on its skin. As soon as flea dirt on the dog's skin are noticed, the dog owner should start with the plan to eradicate these external parasites. Many dog owners are not concerned about the fleas that infest the dog as often times dogs only suffer from itching however, blood loss that results from severe infestation can lead to anemia and consequently to the death of the pet.
To completely eradicate the infestation, fleas must be removed not only from the pet but from the environment as well. These pesky tiny insects are great jumpers thus they can easily jump from one host to another and spread the infestation easily. The eradication must be started with bathing the pet with flea shampoo. As a double measure you can run a fine toothed comb thoroughly through the dog's fur to remove the fleas. Flea baths will kill adult fleas but not the eggs thus the process has to be repeated until the entire flea population is eradicated.
Removing fleas from the environment must be included in the flea eradication plan. Thoroughly vacuum the carpet and all the rooms and make sure to carefully discard the vacuum bag afterwards. Fleas are hardy little pets that can jump from the vacuum bag and start another infestation thus to prevent this situation, adding a strip of flea collar to the bag would be a good idea. Use hot soapy water to wash the dog's toys, crate and beddings. Vacuuming will not be sufficient to remove all the fleas. Spray all the room with anti-flea chemicals and insecticides. To totally remove the fleas, the yard must be sprayed with insecticides as well.
Anti flea chemicals are readily available for owners wanting to make the pet flea-free. Although anti flea chemicals were specifically formulated to eradicate flea infestation, excessive use can have negative effects on the health of the dog.
